Because we use a framework of hue, value, chroma notations here at The Land of Color, we’re able to track and analyze the different results different people get in different spaces and light sources.

In other words in different lighting and in context of different room contents.

What that means for YOU is the data we share should be used as a guideline. And the guideline for this color is be aware that you could see moments of purple-ish. It depends on the light and context (other stuff in the space) because both will influence how this color actually shows up in your space.

If you’ve have searched the internet far and wide looking for color reviews and information, you may have noticed the reviews are all over the place. Some say it’s “the perfect warm, neutral gray” while others report that “it has purple undertones”.

Paint colors – colors in general – do not have undertones. Nothing is hidden or under anything. All paint colors belong to a hue family. Low Chroma colors like Wind’s Breath are more susceptible to shifting in actual appearance. We know this thanks to the scientific, hue/value, chroma color order system we use and teach.

How can we so clearly and concisely categorize color of whites and off-whites? Because we have hue, value, chroma and LRV color notations that describe what colors look like. So, we can easily eliminate confusion and chaos. Making the task of sorting and categorizing paint colors fun and an absolute pleasure:

Whites
Value 9.12 to 10.00
Chroma less than 0.55
Off-Whites
Value 9.12 to 10.00
Chroma 0.55 to 1.15
Light Near Neutrals
Value 8.12 up to 9.12
Chroma 0.1 to 1.00
