What is the Color Category?

LIGHT NEAR NEUTRAL –  because of its Value of 8.86 and Chroma of 0.65. Paint color names can be deceiving can’t they? Even though China White has a low Chroma of 0.65 like colors of white and off-white, it’s too dark to be classified in the white categories.

One advantage that darker Value gives you is that it will work with many colors of white on trim, doors and cabinets. In other words, the contrast in terms of Value won’t make a color of white look dirty or dingy.

How do we know all this? Because we have hue, value, chroma and LRV color notations that describe what colors look like. So, we can easily sort and categorize paint colors:

Whites
Value 9.12 to 10.00
Chroma less than 0.55
Off-Whites
Value 9.12 to 10.00
Chroma 0.55 to 1.15
Light Near Neutrals
Value 8.12 up to 9.12
Chroma 0.1 to 1.00
Near Neutrals
Value 0.1 up to 8.12
Chroma 0.1 to 1.00
