Yep. There’s More Than One Pottery Barn White
Pottery Barn white paint isn’t just one color color of white. They have several colors of white that they use for different collections. So, not every collection piece is available in every white.
What white paint color will match my (insert piece of furniture here) from Pottery Barn? This is a question I’m asked often. It’s not hard to figure out with a little color know-how.
How to Get Paint Color Matches for Pottery Barn White
Here’s how we did it – a portable color measurement device is the answer.
I recommend Spectro 1 and Spectro 1 Pro from Variable, Inc. These are professional level devices with a price-point of about $300. I used a Spectro 1 to measure these samples.
A Color Muse is what I consider an entry-level device and it is the most affordable at around $70.
The way entry-level devices like Color Muse are marketed is you scan something – like the yellow swatch of fabric you see here – and the Color Muse app that Bluetooth connects with your phone or tablet suggests paint colors that are closest in appearance.
Why a Standard Light Source is Your Friend
It absolutely works but there’s a lot more portable color measurement devices can do. Scanning for paint color matches like the above example is a fraction their capability.
All of these hand-held instruments have a built-in LED light source and the scanners are designed to block out all ambient light.
So the only light hitting your target color comes from the LED and is balanced across the spectrum
Which means you can use them any time, anywhere and you don’t have to worry if there’s “good light” or not.
It’s essentially taking the instruments and process out from behind a paint counter and condensing it down to a system that fits in the palm of your hand and connects to a phone app via Bluetooth.
And it works beautifully.
Color Measurements Simply Explained
The accuracy of these devices is nothing less than amazing. If you’d like to research exactly how successful they are at measuring color, the makers all have documentation on their websites.
If you want to learn more about how it all works and how to use this extraordinary science to help you choose colors (not just paint colors), check out The Four Pillars of Color course over at campchroma.com.
I make how color works easy to understand and teach you everything you need to know to level up your color skills. No matter where you’re starting from.
To get the best paint color matches for the Pottery Barn White colors, I went directly to the source.
For more than a decade, Jake has been my Director of Operations. He goes with me to every job site and does all the the things to do with the data values. He’s taken thousands of measurements and scanned every sort of building material you can think of.
He recently graduated from New Mexico State University with degrees in mechanical engineering, renewable energy and history.
He’s selectively looking for the right job because he can afford to be picky, so it’s just a matter of time before I lose my helper.
Until then, it’s business as usual so we packed up and headed off to our local store. The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. We were able to measure every Pottery Barn white sample they had in the store.
Back at the office, I pulled all the data we gathered together and got busy finding the best matches possible from as many major paint brands as I could.
You might be wondering why it’s important to have more than one paint color/brand on the list.
Well, keep in mind we are dealing with colors of white and technically off-white.
Each paint brand has its own proprietary system of bases and colorants which means crossing brands to match colors of white doesn’t always work out so great.
As a general rule – not just when it comes to white paint colors – it’s always better to buy your color in its home brand rather than trying to have it matched somewhere else.
Some colors do cross brands gracefully but you never know what you’re going to get. Here’s a blog post with everything you need to know about tweaking paint formulas.
You have to go into the color matching process with the attitude that close enough will be good enough and it’s a bonus if it ends up a perfect match.
If you want to shoot for a spot-on, perfect match, you have to take a sample to a paint store and ask them to create a custom color to match your sample.
Let’s be clear – that’s not what we did. Toting a piece of furniture in every color of Pottery Barn white to the paint store is obviously not a reasonable approach to figuring out paint color dupes.
We measured the samples in-store and I used that data to find existing paint colors that matched. So, without further ado, here are the best matches I found for the range of Pottery Barn White furniture colors.
I suggest ordering two samples of each color so you can put them together and really get a good-sized view of how each white shows up in your space. It’s a small investment that will give you immense peace of mind.
Oh, and one more thing…
This is something you probably already know but it’s my job to remind you that paint colors do not render accurately online. I’ve provided direct links to make it as easy for you as possible to properly test these colors.

Last but not least, a disclaimer is in order. I can’t guarantee the accuracy of these matches. We cleaned the in-store samples and did everything we could to get the best readings; but I don’t know about PB’s color quality management for samples, lots or batches.
Did you happen to check “simply white”? Thanks for this post!
Hi TOV,
Our process is measure the PB colors to get their color data values – or DNA.
We take that PB DNA and use it to find a paint color that matches as close as possible.
Simply White didn’t make the cut. Hope that helps.
My son’s crib is Pottery Barn simply white, will you check that one to see what matches best? Thank you!
I’m looking for simply white too!
