What is the Color Category?

Light Near Neutral – because of its Value of 8.51 and Chroma of 0.47.

Crushed Ice is a lower Chroma (colorfulness) color that factually belongs to the middle of the yellow hue family. We know it can actually show up when in place a couple different ways – color shift happens and it happens due to the light source.

So, when you’re testing Crushed Ice, here’s what to look for:

1. Just gray – a neutral gray, no discernible hue bias that can swing warm or cool and kind of resembles the color concrete.
2. Blue or Blue-Green – If you’re looking for a muted gray that flashes ever so slightly with hints of blue/blue-green, Crushed Ice is worth a try because it can show up as the most gorgeous unexpectedly blue-green-gray paint color that’s not too light, not too dark with its LRV of 66%.
3. Green – this is something you should always be aware of with low Chroma colors from the yellow hue family. When we knock back the intensity of yellowness, colors from the yellow hue family – especially around 5Y to 10Y – can intrinsically shift greenish.

I feel like I should add another category below called “Chameleon” because there are many paint colors like Crushed Ice that has quite the range of how it can actually show up.

With all paint colors it’s important to sample in place. I recommend Samplize Peel and Stick samples because they’re made with real paint.

How can we determine a color category? Because we have hue, value, chroma and LRV color notations that describe what colors look like. So, we can easily sort and categorize paint colors:
