
In my last post, we looked at the industry’s not-so-subtle and gradual demotion of undertone theory from a crucial ability you must have to casual design slang. Spheres within paint, color and design worlds simply stopped treating phantom, hidden colors like an unassailable method.
But why did this pivot happen right now? Why did a methodology that held a monolithic grip on color specification for over a decade suddenly enter a phase of systemic reckoning?
The answer lies in a powerful cultural and technological phenomenon called perception drift.
Perception drift is the moment a long-held, accepted framework fractures because the collective reality shifts. It’s what happens when people are handed the tools to realize that the theories they were taught do not match the world they see. And in the built world, this drift is being accelerated by a single, massive force: the democratization of objective data through AI.
The Wall of Reality
For years, the burden of proof in color specification was entirely on the individual. The classic undertone narrative dictated that if a color failed on a wall, the system wasn’t broken; your pedestrian untrained eye was the problem.
It created a repetitive, exhausting cycle inside millions of homes and design studios. A homeowner would read an online resource declaring that a specific paint color was a flawless “green taupe.” They would purchase the sample, apply it to their wall, step back, and experience an immediate wave of self-doubt.
“I only see beige,” they would think. “I don’t see any green. What the hell is taupe. Why can’t I see what the experts see?”
Previously, that individual operated in an isolated silo. They assumed they lacked the mystical “trained eye” required to unlock the hidden undertone. They didn’t realize that their eye was working perfectly; they were simply running headfirst into the laws of light, color, and human color perception.
When an online resource dictates a color label in a vacuum, it ignores context. But when that paint sample hits a real wall, physics takes over. The actual light source, the spatial realities of a room, and the surrounding environment dictate the actual perceived color.
For example, the green wasn’t so sneaky that the homeowner was ill-equipped to see it; the green wasn’t there because inherent light sources didn’t physically allow it to manifest for it to be seen – by anyone.
Undertones are not factual metrics. They are nothing more than someone’s subjective opinion of what a color looks like to them, under an unspecified light source, in a completely random context.
AI and the Democratization of Clarity
Enter the catalyst of modern perception drift: high-volume, accessible artificial intelligence.
Widespread AI usage has shattered the informational monopoly of a subjective undertone approach to color. But it isn’t doing it by handing users a perfect, ready-to-use depot of color metrics. In fact, if you ask a general AI model for a specific paint color’s Munsell notation, it will confidently hallucinate a set of numbers that are completely incorrect.
Why does AI get color data like LCh and Munsell notations wrong every single time? Because standard AI knowledge bases are ungoverned when it comes to not just color data but also color science; they do not possess a structured, accurate framework to reason about the psycho-physical science of color. And it’s especially lost when it comes to the practical application of color science to specifying color for the built world.
What AI does do exceptionally well, however, is talk about the core science. It has a bigger reach than I do, bringing color science to millions of people one prompt at a time:
- Spectral Data, Hue Angles and Hue Families: Teaching people that colors are mapped on a 360-degree color wheel. A color’s hue is derived from dominant wavelength – no one’s taking their best guess. Hue is a measurable dimension of color.
- Lightness (L*) and Munsell Value: Breaking the news that there are explicit, numbers-driven values whose specific job is to tell you how light or dark a color looks. This blows up the misuse of LRV — whose only job is to tell you how much light a color reflects in a percentage, not how light or dark it looks to the human eye.
- Chroma: Quantifying a color’s purity or grayness to explain why a neutral shifts so aggressively from room to room.
But once AI illuminates these abstract scientific concepts, users find themselves at a sudden standstill. They are seeking refuge from the blight of undertones, but they lack the governed data and strategic workflow required to actually apply this science to real-world projects.
