A Consensus Undertone is the static label commonly tethered to a paint color. Undertones are not standardizable because they are based on subjective opinion and the theory lacks structure. The common undertone labels in the chart are the result of a patent-pending color analysis framework applied to deep research on undertone used as a descriptive label—such as green, pink, blue or yellow. These labels can vary from one source or observer to another.

Hue family is the objective and reliable way to understand a color, which is why the Paint Color DNA Studio leverages science-based hue family — and why the Studio is a professional color tool subscription.
